If living compassionately is one of your resolutions, chances are you’re finding that doing so affects every facet of life, including your wardrobe. Thankfully you don’t have to sacrifice style to shop sustainably. Leading Conscious Lifestyle Expert and Luxury Vegan Founder, Dominique Side shares her top tips for curating a conscious closet.

Be Material Mindful. Avoid materials like silk, polyester, leather, wool and fur. Dominique recommends ensuring that the items are also sustainable and eco-friendly.

Shop Sustainably. Luxury design houses like Oscar de la Renta and Gucci are now prioritizing vegan fashion. Budget friendly options are also available as online consignment stores like ThredUp are gaining popularity. Rent the Runway also boasts rentable designer items that allow you to buy less and bypass the negative environmental impacts that come from the production of new clothing.

Implement the 1:1 Approach. After auditing your current closet, differentiate which items you’re no longer wearing by turning the hanger in the opposite direction. If after some time has passed and the item goes untouched, it may be time to donate. Only after donating an item should, you look to purchase another, lowering your consumer imprint.
